Turkish Port Operators Association (T\u00dcRKL\u0130M) Consultant Prof. Soner Esmer stated that despite the loosening in the Far East line, this time there was trouble on the African line. Esmer emphasized that there was a capacity problem in exports to Africa and that the freight rate increased rapidly with the increase in export demand to these regions. Turkey-Africa freight, which was around 800 dollars before the pandemic, has risen to over 3 thousand dollars, especially with the increase in the last weeks. Soner Esmer stated that exports to Libya increased significantly due to Ramadan, so Libyan export freight, which was 1,200 dollars in January, has seen over 3,500 dollars with the increases in the last 15 days.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty of finding the return cargo of the ship going to Africa was also effective in this increase. Soner Esmer said, \u201cIn parallel with the recent improvement in political relations, exports to African countries such as Libya and Tunisia have accelerated. Trade with these countries has increased, but the ship owners serving there are local and relatively low capacity lines such as Akkon, Medkon and Arkas. In other words, the TEU carrying capacity of the lines is low. When the delays in the withdrawal of import containers and empty return due to the pandemic were added to this whole table, the shipowners increased the freight. North African ports started to work much slower than usual, according to information received from shipowners. This disrupted the order of the ship voyages,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Emre Eldener, President of the Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers (UTIKAD), stated that its members have difficulties in making reservations especially for West Africa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Owner&#8217;s input cost increases<\/p>\n<p>Representatives of some shipping companies, speaking to WORLD, pointed out that the main reason for the increase in freight was the increase in input costs. Maritime transport is a lively structure and the healthy survival of this structure will allow all stakeholders to grow in a healthy way.<\/p>\n<p>Burak \u00d6nder, Chairman of the Household and Kitchenware Manufacturers and Exporters Association (EVSID), said that the equipment shortage has decreased relatively, and that African and American freight rates have peaked. \u00d6nder said, &#8220;In the Americas, the increase rate was 4 times. In Africa, the serious increase continues before Ramadan. A decrease in prices is expected after the half of April. While the daily rental price of ships with a capacity of 1,600 \u2013 1,800 TEU was 7,950 dollars in 2020, it exceeded 17 thousand dollars last week. As the rents increase, the rental periods vary between 2-3 years. Even if you agree to pay these high rents, you cannot find a ship to charter in the market. Due to this imbalance in supply and demand, rents continue to increase every week. There were high increases in oil prices and, accordingly, the fuel prices used in ships. The price of LSFO, which we bought from an average of 383 dollars per ton in December 2020, increased to an average of 485 dollars last week. Fuel price had risen to $525 per ton in previous weeks.
