Container freight from Turkey to Africa has increased rapidly. With the effect of Ramadan, the increase in freight since January in transportation to countries such as Libya and Tunisia has exceeded 150% and exceeded 3 thousand dollars.<\/p>\n

One crisis ends in the sea, another begins. After the easing of the container crisis in the Far East route, this time troubles began in the direction of Africa. With the effect of Ramadan, the freight, which was 1,200 dollars in January, in transportation to countries such as Libya and Tunisia, exceeded 3 thousand dollars in the last 15 days.<\/p>\n

Relief began in the empty container crisis, which had a major impact on global trade, and the Far East-Europe container freight, which had increased by 300 percent in the last year, began to decline with the decrease in congestion at Chinese ports. Turkish Port Operators Association (T\u00dcRKL\u0130M) Consultant Prof. Soner Esmer stated that despite the loosening in the Far East line, this time there was trouble on the African line. Esmer emphasized that there was a capacity problem in exports to Africa and that the freight rate increased rapidly with the increase in export demand to these regions. Turkey-Africa freight, which was around 800 dollars before the pandemic, has risen to over 3 thousand dollars, especially with the increase in the last weeks. Soner Esmer stated that exports to Libya increased significantly due to Ramadan, so Libyan export freight, which was 1,200 dollars in January, has seen over 3,500 dollars with the increases in the last 15 days.<\/p>\n

The difficulty of finding the return cargo of the ship going to Africa was also effective in this increase. Soner Esmer said, \u201cIn parallel with the recent improvement in political relations, exports to African countries such as Libya and Tunisia have accelerated. Trade with these countries has increased, but the ship owners serving there are local and relatively low capacity lines such as Akkon, Medkon and Arkas. In other words, the TEU carrying capacity of the lines is low. When the delays in the withdrawal of import containers and empty return due to the pandemic were added to this whole table, the shipowners increased the freight. North African ports started to work much slower than usual, according to information received from shipowners. This disrupted the order of the ship voyages,” he said.<\/p>\n

Emre Eldener, President of the Association of International Forwarding and Logistics Service Providers (UTIKAD), stated that its members have difficulties in making reservations especially for West Africa.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Owner’s input cost increases<\/p>\n

Representatives of some shipping companies, speaking to WORLD, pointed out that the main reason for the increase in freight was the increase in input costs. On the one hand, ship rental costs and container prices increase, on the other hand, fuel costs increase.<\/p>\n

Akkon Lines Board Member Kaptan Hakan \u00c7evik made the following assessment regarding the increase in freight: \u201cCapacity and accompanying freight changes in the main freight corridors affect smaller regional freights, local and relatively smaller regional lines follow these trends as a domino effect. When there are large increases in the cost parameters that make up the freight, the shipowner naturally revises the freight. Container ships are already expensive charter vessels. Ship charters peaked in all charter indexes and rocket increases were made. Rental costs have increased a lot, especially in crane vessels in our region. The increase in fuel prices also has a major impact on the increase in freight, which now consumes more expensive products of the low-sulphur type. On the other hand, container prices have almost tripled and you cannot order containers. Waiting in African ports and inefficient operations in operations due to the epidemic cause waiting for ships. This is a factor that affects freight. Therefore, freight levels had to be increased. Maritime transport is a lively structure and the healthy survival of this structure will allow all stakeholders to grow in a healthy way.<\/p>\n

Burak \u00d6nder, Chairman of the Household and Kitchenware Manufacturers and Exporters Association (EVSID), said that the equipment shortage has decreased relatively, and that African and American freight rates have peaked. \u00d6nder said, “In the Americas, the increase rate was 4 times. In Africa, the serious increase continues before Ramadan. A decrease in prices is expected after the half of April. Otherwise, the increase in these prices will not remove exports.”<\/p>\n

Arkas Line officials summarized the developments in input costs, which caused an increase in African freights, as follows:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the last 6 months, the increase in container ship rentals has exceeded 100 percent. Looking at the tonnage of ships operating between Turkey\/Libya-Tunisia, based on the data obtained from the Maersk Broker Container Weekly Market Report; While ships with a capacity of 900-1,200 TEU were chartered for an average of $6,565 per day in 2020, this figure increased to $13,475 last week. While the daily rental price of ships with a capacity of 1,600 \u2013 1,800 TEU was 7,950 dollars in 2020, it exceeded 17 thousand dollars last week. As the rents increase, the rental periods vary between 2-3 years. Even if you agree to pay these high rents, you cannot find a ship to charter in the market. Due to this imbalance in supply and demand, rents continue to increase every week. There were high increases in oil prices and, accordingly, the fuel prices used in ships. The price of LSFO, which we bought from an average of 383 dollars per ton in December 2020, increased to an average of 485 dollars last week. Fuel price had risen to $525 per ton in previous weeks.
